VILLE RICA, Italy (AP) Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni is seeking to reassure his country’s struggling tourist industry and tourism sector amid a massive surge in visitors coming to the island nation.
Gentiloni announced last week that a plan to expand Ville Rica’s capacity by 20 percent by 2020 was underway.
The resort is Italy’s most popular with tourists from around the world, with more than 1 million staying there in the last year.
It has become one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country with about 8 million people visiting annually, according to government data.
The government wants to attract up to 25 million visitors annually, with a 10 percent increase from 2020.
It also wants to offer tourists more affordable accommodation, while boosting the use of its nearby town of Tuscany, where more than 3 million tourists visit annually.
